Events are Coast’s greatest economic weapon

by Amber Madden & Samuel Poncini

The Sunshine Coast’s economy boomed last month when the 2016 Surf Live Saving Australian Championships took place at Maroochydore Beach.

Councillor Jason O’Pray said the Coast saw a fresh $20 million in revenue and the 7000 competitors that attended the event had a tonne of fun.

Around 22,000 spectators flocked to Maroochydore Beach to catch all the action.
The crowds made viewing room hard to come by, so some improvisation was required.

Although the weather was lovely, competitors battled rough surf conditions.
